Skin Care for the busy traveler - Give your body a home spa treatment
Skin Care for the busy traveler
Don't Hibernate- Exfoliate
by E.J. Sulc
Don't be surprised if you find your skin is still recovering from those intense summer rays and their damaging effects well into the fall and winter months.

Hot summer sun, humidity and changes in temperature from harsh indoor air-conditioning and heating can leave the skin with more dulling debris than you can imagine. These environmental conditions, along with stress and hormones, may also contribute to teenage and adult acne.

We exfoliate for many different reasons - to slough off dead skin cells, to help remedy breakouts and treat acne prone skin, to allow for better penetration of treatment products and moisture and, of course, to have healthy, glowing skin!

You should always remember that exfoliation treatments are definitely not "one size fits all." They must be customized to meet your individual and ever-changing skin needs. For example, regular skin exfoliation using something as gentle as rice bran or corn meal may be more suitable for your skin than exfoliating with abrasive almonds.

After a thorough cleansing, you should further protect your skin and seal in the benefits of your moisturizer with products that contain shea butter, oat extract and Vitamin E. All of these will help provide relief for chapping, inflammation or dryness.

Although men and women's skin is similar in structure, men tend to have more hair and increased oil production. Men can certainly benefit from a professionally recommended skin care regimen, not only to remedy shaving problems, but also to combat other problems frequently associated with men's skin. After all, there's nothing manly about not taking care of your skin!

When it comes to shaving, our advice is to shave with the direction of hair growth and use an emollient that will soften the beard and protect the skin. Organic silicones help buffer the razor and prevent nicks and essential oils will smooth and condition the skin.

Shaving in the shower is ideal because your pores soften with steam and your skin and beard will be at their softest. Investing in a fogless mirror is also a good idea.

Don't forget, shaving is considered exfoliation, so always hydrate your skin with a lightweight moisturizer afterward.

You should also remember that recently exfoliated skin needs some tender loving care. Always make sure to wear sunscreen during the day and a moisturizer suited to your skin at night to help protect the skin's natural defense barrier.
