Alice Mora, founder and publisher of the North Platte Traveler, was named the North Platte Evening Business and Professional Women local organization's Woman of the Month at the club's meeting April 15.
Mora was selected for not only establishing the magazine and serving as its publisher, but also for using the magazine as a means to show the positive side of living in North Platte.
In less than a year, Mora has taken the idea for the magazine to publishing a fall/winter issue that was released in November. A spring/summer issue will be released mid-May.
Mora was also selected for promoting understanding and awareness of Native Americans with her presentations explaining the Lakota Sioux traditions to clubs and schools. Each issue of The North Platte Traveler will include a special feature on a Native American Artist or group.
The North Platte Traveler magazine and NEBRASKAland DAYS are sponsoring the first Old Glory Souvenir Program and Events Guide for NEBRASKAland DAYS.
There will be a free celebration in the Loup River Room at Quality Inn and Suites in North Platte on May 3 to showcase the new issue.
Highlighting the celebration will be special performances at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. by the Crazy Horse Native American Drumgroup and Exhibition Dancers.
The dancers will be performing Men's and Women's Traditional Dance, Men's Fancy Dance, Men's Grass Dance, Women's Fancy Shawl Dance and Women's Jingle Dress Dance.
The day will be colorful and entertaining as well as educational.
The event is free. Door prizes totaling about $1,000 will be awarded.
