Dancing Leaf Lodge
Treasure on our doorstep

What comes to mind when you think of southwest Nebraska? Some of
the deepest loess hills and canyons in the world, covered with cedar trees?
Numerous meandering spring fed creeks? An abundance of wildlife? Home
to world-class prehistoric fossil finds? Archeological evidence of pre-historic
and historic peoples?
If any of these thoughts did not come to mind in connection with the southwest
corner of Nebraska, then you owe it to yourself to take a 20-minute drive
south of Interstate 80 at North Platte to visit Dancing Leaf Cultural
Center and experience them.
The owners and operators of Dancing Leaf are Les and Jan Hosick. They
have spent their entire lives in this part of Nebraska. They each grew
up along one of the many spring fed creeks – Les along the Medicine
Creek and Jan along the Muddy Creek. While running the canyon hills in
their youth, they discovered evidence of the Early Peoples, who also lived
along these same creeks. Their interest in those discoveries, plus their
love of nature, has grown into a way of life for them over the years.
Les followed his interest by volunteering on professional archeology and
paleontology salvage work over the past 25 years or so. Jan became an
educator, teaching in the public schools for 12 years, and then in early
childhood development for another 12 years before she and Les developed
the Dancing Leaf Cultural Learning Center. The center allowed them both
to use their construction and educational abilities and combine that with
their childhood interests and love of nature.
They would like to share with you an experience at Dancing Leaf where
you can actually view and handle prehistoric fossils found in the area.
You can also walk the same places as prehistoric peoples did, while learning
of their lives, the plants they used and the wonders of the sky.
