A Balance of choices
by Allison O'Neill
Life is about balance and the choices we make -- how we're going to spend
our time and what we're going to do.
Adding extra pounds to our frame represents a series of choices we have
made. Losing weight is about balancing our choices in the future.
There are a number of ways to shed unwanted pounds -- pills, exercises,
meal replacements and specialty diets. So where do we start?
Dieting shouldn't involve getting rid of the foods that are "bad"
for us forever. We just need to eat less of the poor choices and eat more
of the good choices. |
Most people consume too many
high-carbohydrate and sugar-laced food and drinks. This is where most
of us pack on the pounds. Our body metabolizes only so much sugar, and
then the rest gets stored and can turn into fat. Balance carbohydrate
and sugar intake with enough protein, grains, fruits and vegetables.
Here are a few musts when losing weight.
Dieting or not, take a good-quality multi-vitamin daily. Our body needs
at least 20 vitamins and minerals a day to function properly.
Drink lots of water. Our body needs water to function, plus it helps flush
out our system. Substitute water for soft drinks, coffee or other beverages.
Get sugar through other natural sources such as fruits and fresh juices.
Skipping meals is a big mistake. Metabolism slows down when we don't fuel
our body consistently throughout the day. Eating frequent but smaller
meals can help, but be careful what is eaten in those "little"
meals.
As we get older, our metabolism usually slows down. Many things can affect
our metabolism. Exercise is important because it raises our metabolism,
which burns fat. Choose some form of exercise that works for your lifestyle.
Exercise also benefits physical and emotional health.
Be sure to eat more protein-rich foods to lose body fat and not muscle.
Meal-replacement shakes and bars that are high in protein but low in carbohydrates
and sugar can be used effectively as snacks or meals.
There are many diet pills available. Thermogenics are designed to increase
metabolism (heat your body up), therefore achieving the fat-burning aspect.
Different kinds of stimulants are used and people with certain health
issues need to choose wisely. Diet supplements can also contain things
that help with appetite suppression, fat transportation, carbohydrate
absorption, digestion, blood-sugar control and increase your energy. Diet
supplements can range from $10 to more than $100 a bottle. Choose one
that is geared to your health needs and lifestyle.
Check with a physician or qualified healthcare provider prior to using
weight-loss supplements, especially if there are health issues. Always
read the fine print on the product and the dosage amount. Diet pills should
be used only as directed and are not intended for long-term use, and should
be used in conjunction with exercise and eating a balanced diet.
Life is about balance and choices. Taking time to choose a weight-loss
program, eating right, exercising and keeping our lifestyles balanced
will balance the scale as well. |
